This is no light matter. God has warned us that he'll hold us to account and make us pay. He was quite explicit: "Vengeance is mine, and I won't overlook a thing" and "God will judge his people." that very last line sounds extremely threatening...
i think thats the point. the NIV says "IT IS A DREADFUL THING TO FALL INTO THE HANDS OF THE LIVING GOD"
It's not so much a threat, but its just honest--putting it out there--like hey--this is how its gonna go down, and no amount of smooth talk with change it.
